Bioinspired Flexible and Programmable Negative Stiffness Mechanical Metamaterials

چکیده

Energy-absorbing materials are widely used under certain high-frequency scenarios, such as cargo packaging or sport protection. Though negative stiffness mechanical metamaterials have many distinctive advantages, fairly low strength and poor specific energy absorption unfortunately limit their present industrial applications. Inspired by the excellent cushioning performance of paw pads mammals, a novel flexible energy-absorbing metamaterial is proposed herein. Results show that presented outperforms traditional with respect to cushion performance. Moreover, programming strategy achieve multistage tuning between large high rebound properties.

Programmable mechanical metamaterials.

We create mechanical metamaterials whose response to uniaxial compression can be programmed by lateral confinement, allowing monotonic, nonmonotonic, and hysteretic behavior. These functionalities arise from a broken rotational symmetry which causes highly nonlinear coupling of deformations along the two primary axes of these metamaterials. We introduce a soft mechanism model which captures the...

Programmable mechanical metamaterials: the role of geometry.

We experimentally and numerically study the role of geometry for the mechanics of biholar metamaterials, which are quasi-2D slabs of rubber patterned by circular holes of two alternating sizes. We recently showed how the response to uniaxial compression of these metamaterials can be programmed by lateral confinement. In particular, there is a range of confining strains εx for which the resistan...

Controlled Unusual Stiffness of Mechanical Metamaterials

Mechanical metamaterials that are engineered with sub-unit structures present unusual mechanical properties depending on the loading direction. Although they show promise, their practical utility has so far been somewhat limited because, to the best of our knowledge, no study about the potential of mechanical metamaterials made from sophisticatedly tailored sub-unit structures has been made. He...

Mechanical metamaterials with negative compressibility transitions.

When tensioned, ordinary materials expand along the direction of the applied force. Here, we explore network concepts to design metamaterials exhibiting negative compressibility transitions, during which a material undergoes contraction when tensioned (or expansion when pressured). Continuous contraction of a material in the same direction of an applied tension, and in response to this tension,...

Programmable Elastic Metamaterials

We introduce a novel concept for the design of programmable-elasticity metamaterials; materials whose elastic properties can be modified instantaneously and reversibly on demand. Real-time tunable linear and nonlinear elastic moduli are obtained in lattice materials by adjustment of strut connectivity via actuation of embedded electromagnetic locks. The Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of pr...
